Design Directions

A new breed of laid back modern homes are springing up all over town, and they're pointing the way towards a direction in design style. If you're building or remodeling your own home, get to know these design trends before calling your contractor or your ID specialist.

NATURAL SELECTION
In every aspect of home decor, natural materials - or at least natural-looking materials - are quickly redefining the look of contemporary homes. This is spearheaded by the popularity of wood flooring, which has overtaken the living rooms of countless new houses today. Laminate wood flooring is now available in a huge variety of colours and wood types, and sets the scene for a warmer, more engaging home. It is relatively easy to install, and most varieties are resistant against termites and humidity.

It's really the inherent qualities in them - such as the natural patterns and grains - that give these materials their uniqueness and, ultimately, their worth. For that, they do come with heftier price tags, but you can think of it as upping the value of your property.

Whether it's on your floors or your furniture, wood sets a calming, naturalistic tone to your home

PLAN AHEAD!
Most houses will only afford you one good view of your garden. So if outdoor views are important to you, decide whether you want this room to become your dining or your living room - depending on where you anticipate spending the most time in. This will invariably affect the layout of all your main spaces.

Keeping nature close to the home is one way of creating better views from the indoors

OUTDOORS IN
Natural-inspired spaces are becoming the new standard in urban luxury. And for this, city dwellers are taking extra efforts to bring a little bit of the outdoors in. The look is typically achieved in two ways, the first of which is to erect a semi-outdoor space - such as a patio or a veranda - in order to blur the transition between garden and home.

The second is to minimise the actual distance between the interior and the yard space. This means reducing the amount of tiled floor between your front door and your grass patch. In this sense, plants and water features can actually be brought much closer to your living room, and the two spaces are less delineated when your doors and windows are left open.

Flower Power

interesting-living-room-with-flower-decoration
Fresh flowers always add a nice touch to the home. They give colour, style and fragrance to any room and are perfect everyday accessory for any budget. So, try these creative ideas for displaying flowers to suit your personal style and decor.

[1] Choosing The Flowers
* Roses, lilies, tulips and irises are most commonly chosen for flower arrangement. However the type of flowers varies according to the style and occasion. For example, a traditional Asian arrangement makes use of native Asian flowers such as lotus blossoms.
* Select flowers that complement each other in colour and shape. For an interesting arrangement, use flowers in various stages of bloom and position the fully open blossoms in the center as the focal point.
* Choose soothing colours, like blues and greens, to create a tranquil feeling of bright reds and oranges for a more energetic arrangement. Yellows and peaches are nurturing and pinks and lavenders are romantic.

[2] Caring For Your Flowers
* Always cut flower stems as soon as you get them home, then put flowers in a bucket of warm water and let them sit for two or three hours. This opens the capillaries so the water can flow to the flower heads.
* Before you put the flowers in the vase, remove all leaves below the waterline. This keeps the bacteria down and helps the water stay clean longer.
* Keep flowers in a cool spot and away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate. Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions.
* Change the water in your flowers every other day, or when it looks cloudy as it is a sign of bacteria manifestation.

[3] Placing The Flowers
* Place vases in high traffic areas like the dining table. It's the place where everyone constantly gathers.
* Put a vase of flowers at the doorway where you keep your keys. It will be the last place you see on your way out the door and the first you see on your way back inside.
* Make a creative statement by displaying a single blooming stern in a patterned wineglass. Fill the glass with glass pebbles and then insert one dramatic bloom.

Eye-Popping Pink

Pink is the colour of recreation and pleasure. So if you're looking to add oomph and vivre to certain parts of your home, there's no better way than to splash some pink into it.

To most people, pink has strong feminine associations. Experts say this is totally misguided! The fact is, there are many options for pink - it can be soothing, warm and even relaxing. And provided if you don't overdo it, even men can relate to pink.

The design of this room using the color pink as the main color on the walls of the room. Furniture that is used also have a matching color with the color pink as the color of cream. Television flat, white sofas complement living room the friendly impressed . Ornamental plants, lights and other trinkets to make this room becomes more alive. Floors made of merbau solid hardwood reinforced the impression that the owner of this room combines warmth and comfort to anyone who visits.

When decorating with pink, it is important to break it up with different shades throughout the house, using colours that will balance it such as cream, chocolate, black grey or even purple. Today's pink are fresher and softer compared to the 80s. But for home decorating purposes, it is still appropriate to find a balance instead of going pink all the way.

How to use pink?
* A modern look for pink is to balance it with chromes and brushed nickels. Soft pinks coupled with accents of whites and creams give rooms a fresh look, as long as the pink isn't overdone.

* In the living room, pink works best as an accent with pillows, flowers or other decorative objects.

* Pairing pink and orange together creates a really current look. Alternatively you can try pink with purple and white, using silver as base accents.

* Pink balanced with green can give rooms a soft French country look and will flatter most people's skin tones.

* If you are young at heart, or trying to be, a deep or vibrant pink accent wall can be a stimulating addition to your home, especially in your bedroom.

Remember .....
Your grandma probably told you a thousand times, but too much of anything is not going to do you good. In the case of using colours with strong emotional links at home, such as pink, it is not necessary to have whole walls painted with it, or to fill your house with whole ranges of pink furniture. Instead, just try chipping in the colour in the form of soft furnishing, such as upholsteries, curtains or carpets. This way, you spend less and retain the bonus of regret and revert ...

Child Safety Tips

The following are tips from the experts at Hunter Douglas Window Fashions on how to make your home - and particulary your windows - safer for children:
  • Use window guards on all windows above the first floor. Screens aren't strong enough to stop the fall; they are meant to keep insects out, not to keep children in. Look for quick release features for easy emergency exits.
  • If it's necessary to keep windows open for ventilation, install locks that limit the size of the opening.
  • For sliding glass doors, apply bright stickers at a child's eyes level to alert him or her to the presence of glass.
  • Be sure to keep all furniture and cribs away from windows.

Pre-Renovation Tips

That dream home. At one point in our life (or many points for some), we envision our dream home. The walk-in closet, a 60-inch plasma TV with surround system in the entertainment room upstairs or even the garden lamps surrounding the house - all these will become reality through renovation.

Renovating can be a less stressful process if we take the right steps by planning ahead and making the right choices. We plan for months, some even more than a year, to craft the perfect living space of bringing our vision of a perfect home to life.

Getting caught up with how everything will look is something we all get drawn into because it is something we see daily. This is why it is vital that we put thoughts on paper before the vision of our dream home can come true.

Read, research and learn from the mistakes of others
There are plenty of reading materials and stories on the Internet. Do your research first. If you are concerned about the colour and quality of the toilet flush system, be just as concerned about the things that you do not see.

Learn about things like how you can fire-proof your house. Read up on how you can improve the air quality within each room through good ventilation, doors or windows placement. And perhaps, the most important of all, find out what kind of electricity consumption will be required in each area.

Kitchens usually have a number of electricity appliances. It is better to use a standard based cable of the right size for your kitchen needs. Pull an extra cable line in if necessary. Same goes for an air-conditioners which consume more power and hence, the cables used need to match accordingly.

 Checklist
Always do a thorough and complete checklist to ensure consistency and completeness in all renovation areas. It will also help to avoid exceeding your budget. The checklist is the lifeline to your renovation plan.

Your best friend - the contractor
Your contractor is not only your second pair of eyes during the renovation process but he will be your adviser too. The contractor will oversee everything from recommending the type of paint to the choice of cables installed into the walls to your personal bed space.

It is important to pick the right contractor for the job. Do not make the decision based on bids. Lower bids can mean that the contractor is cutting corners. Instead, ask friends or family members for a contractor they have had a good experience with.

 Frequent checks
During the renovation period, conduct frequent checks on the progress of your home. This is going to be your home for a long time (hopefully!) and it deserves your full attention especially if it is to become your dream home. Complaining after the wall has been hacked or the concrete has been poured will only increase cost and cause delays to your renovation work. Be present every day to see the progress of the renovation.

 Extra mileage
Planning ahead for the future is as important as planning beforehand. Keep the leftover paints and tiles for future touch-ups. You would not want to purchase an entire tin of paint to cover up a small chip on the wall or to re-tile cracked floors. Tile designs are notorious for their short manufacturing life.

 Making the right choice
Wood flooring is a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing, and affordable interior floor covering. According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), "In a national survey of real estate agents, 90% said that houses with wood flooring sell faster and for higher prices than houses without wood floors." That being the case, who wouldn't want a wood floor? Prior to racing out and purchasing wood flooring, we need to understand what is available and keep in mind that all wood floors are not created equal.

Wood-Floor Care

After a wood-floor has been installed you will want to protect your investment. Generally speaking, doing so is a relatively easy task that involves cleaning and maintaining your wood-floor on a regular basis. Keep in mind that water is not friends with your wood-floor. As spills or leaks occur, it is best to get them dry as soon as possible. In addition, particles like dirt and dust can act like sandpaper on your new wood floor. It is best to sweep and vacuum the floor often, in order to remove particles from the floor surface and prevent wear and tear.

Should you notice any scuffs, markings, or stains, purchase a professional hardwood floor cleaner to remove the blemish. Prior to initiating a deeper clean, consider the floor's finish and consult with the manufacturer prior to using cleaners and/or waxes. When moving heavy items or furniture, use a dolly to assist you and prevent scratches. Place floor protectors or ventilated rugs (without rubber backing) in high-traffic areas, under furniture, and near wet areas, such as the bathroom sink. With an appropriate amount of care and consideration, a wood floor should last you a lifetime.
