Flower Power

Fresh flowers always add a nice touch to the home. They give colour, style and fragrance to any room and are perfect everyday accessory for any budget. So, try these creative ideas for displaying flowers to suit your personal style and decor.

[1] Choosing The Flowers
* Roses, lilies, tulips and irises are most commonly chosen for flower arrangement. However the type of flowers varies according to the style and occasion. For example, a traditional Asian arrangement makes use of native Asian flowers such as lotus blossoms.
* Select flowers that complement each other in colour and shape. For an interesting arrangement, use flowers in various stages of bloom and position the fully open blossoms in the center as the focal point.
* Choose soothing colours, like blues and greens, to create a tranquil feeling of bright reds and oranges for a more energetic arrangement. Yellows and peaches are nurturing and pinks and lavenders are romantic.

[2] Caring For Your Flowers
* Always cut flower stems as soon as you get them home, then put flowers in a bucket of warm water and let them sit for two or three hours. This opens the capillaries so the water can flow to the flower heads.
* Before you put the flowers in the vase, remove all leaves below the waterline. This keeps the bacteria down and helps the water stay clean longer.
* Keep flowers in a cool spot and away from direct sunlight, heating or cooling vents, directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators. Appliances like televisions give off heat, which causes flowers to dehydrate. Most flowers will last longer under cool conditions.
* Change the water in your flowers every other day, or when it looks cloudy as it is a sign of bacteria manifestation.

[3] Placing The Flowers
* Place vases in high traffic areas like the dining table. It's the place where everyone constantly gathers.
* Put a vase of flowers at the doorway where you keep your keys. It will be the last place you see on your way out the door and the first you see on your way back inside.
* Make a creative statement by displaying a single blooming stern in a patterned wineglass. Fill the glass with glass pebbles and then insert one dramatic bloom.
